In the first four months of 2024, over 300 people passed away in road accidents in Bengaluru, based on the most recent data provided by the traffic police. This year has seen a total of 1,633 reported accidents, resulting in 310 fatalities and 1,376 injuries. These numbers show a worrying increase in the city's accident death count, with 304 incidents classified as fatal and 1,329 as non-fatal.
A detailed analysis of the accident data by division shows that the North and South divisions were the most heavily impacted. The South division witnessed 400 accidents, leading to 69 deaths and 337 injuries. Meanwhile, the North division reported 495 accidents, resulting in 119 fatalities and 420 injuries.
The West division experienced 423 accidents, claiming 57 lives and leaving 369 injured. In the East division, 315 accidents caused 65 fatalities and 250 injuries. Further examination of the sub-divisions indicates certain areas in the city have higher accident rates than others. The North East Sub Division recorded the most accidents at 312, followed by Whitefield Sub Division with 198 accidents and the West Sub Division with 185.
The South East Sub Division reported the fewest accidents at 105. Specific locations stood out for their elevated accident rates. The International Airport Road had the highest number of accidents at 81, followed by Yelahanka at 77. Other areas with notable accident rates include Electronic City with 70 accidents, Kengeri with 69, and Byatarayanapura with 65. Additionally, KR Puram had 76 accidents, Whitefield 62, and Kamakshipalya 54. Among these, Whitefield saw 20 fatalities, while Kengeri and Yelahanka each recorded 17 and 18 casualties, respectively.
The International Airport area reported 26 deaths, and Electronic City had 18 fatalities. In a recent incident near Reva University, a 24-year-old BBA student lost control of his sports bike near the Bellahalli bridge around 9:15 pm on Monday. According to sources, the rider Zubair passed away in the accident, while his college junior Ranjith C., aged 21, sustained facial injuries and is currently undergoing medical treatment.
