Sunil Shelke Secures Second Consecutive Victory in Maval Constituency Reported By Varad Bhatkhande Maval, 23rd November 2024Sunil Shelke, the incumbent Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has clinched his second consecutive victory in the Maval constituency, overcoming significant opposition from independent candidate Bapu Bhegade. Bhegade received backing from the Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) and certain factions within Shelke's alliance partner, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The election results were announced at 11:45 AM, with Shelke leading by an impressive margin of 95,000 votes, effectively sealing his win in the constituency. With 3.83 lakh registered voters in Maval Taluka and a voter turnout of 70.01%, Shelke's substantial lead confirmed his victory well before all rounds of counting were finalized. Despite the challenges posed by Bapu Bhegade, who campaigned as an independent candidate, Shelke maintained a dominant position throughout the election process. This victory marks a significant turnaround for Shelke, who, in 2019, contested as a BJP member against then-sitting BJP MLA Bala Bhegade.
Shelke's rebellious move to join the NCP after Bhegade refused to vacate the seat proved to be a pivotal moment in his political career, leading to his initial victory. The recent election cycle saw tensions resurface as Bala Bhegade once again aimed for the Maval seat. However, the Mahayuti coalition's strategy of granting tickets to incumbent MLAs ensured Shelke's candidacy. In a bid to counter Shelke's stronghold, Balu Bhegade rallied support for independent candidate Bapu Bhegade, igniting a rebellion among local BJP factions.
Despite these obstacles and predictions of a closely contested election, Sunil Shelke emerged victorious, demonstrating resilience and political acumen in a dynamic electoral landscape. His decisive win underscores the evolving political dynamics in Maharashtra as Shelke navigates alliances and opposition to secure his place in the assembly once again.
