Karnataka CM defends 'Nandini' milk price hike to support farmers

TDN

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended the increase in 'Nandini' milk prices by Rs 2, along with an additional 50 ml of milk in half-litre and one-litre packets. He stated that this decision was made to support farmers due to the rising procurement needs. Siddaramaiah clarified that the actual milk prices have not been raised. He explained that the rise in milk production from 90 lakh to over 99 lakh liters per day necessitated increased procurement from farmers.

The adjustment in packet sizes was made in consideration of this, with a proportional increase in prices to cover the additional quantity. Siddaramaiah questioned the possibility of wasting excess milk and emphasized the importance of supporting farmers. In response to reports of restaurants planning to increase coffee and tea prices, Siddaramaiah highlighted that such adjustments are linked to milk price changes.

The opposition BJP criticized the timing of the milk price hike, following recent fuel price increases in the state. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar supported the decision, suggesting that prices should have been raised further to aid distressed farmers.

He accused the BJP of being against farmers and stressed that the additional revenue from the price hike would benefit farmers through the Karnataka Milk Federation. Shivakumar urged the BJP to consider the plight of farmers and compare milk prices across different states.
