Sunrisers Hyderabad secured a victory over Lucknow Super Giants by 10 wickets. Lucknow, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, managed to score 165 runs while losing four wickets in 20 overs. Hyderabad successfully chased the target of 166 runs in just 9.4 overs, winning the match with 62 balls to spare. Travis Head scored 89 runs in 30 balls, supported by eight fours and eight sixes, while Abhishek Sharma played a stellar inning of 75 runs in 28 balls, inclusive of eight fours and six sixes, finishing the match with a six.
Following this triumph, Hyderabad climbed to the third spot in the points table with 14 points from 12 matches, comprising seven wins and five losses, and a net run rate of +0.406. Lucknow, on the other hand, suffered their sixth defeat in 12 matches, placing them in sixth position with 12 points and a net run rate of -0.769. Hyderabad's upcoming matches are against Gujarat Titans on May 16th and Punjab Kings on May 19th, both to be played at their home ground.
Lucknow is scheduled to face Delhi on May 14th at Arun Jaitley Stadium and Mumbai on May 17th at Wankhede. Hyderabad's victory also marked the exit of Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, from the IPL 2024 playoff race. With eight points in 12 matches, Mumbai Indians are the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention this season. Kolkata and Rajasthan currently lead the points table with 16 points each, followed by Hyderabad with 14 points from 12 matches, and Chennai, Delhi, and Lucknow with 12 points each.
Mumbai's low net run rate and 12 points make it impossible for them to advance to the playoffs, delaying their pursuit of a sixth IPL title. Sunrisers Hyderabad set a new record by winning with the most number of balls remaining in an IPL match while chasing a target of over 100 runs. Their 62-ball victory surpasses the previous record held by Delhi Capitals, who won with 57 balls to spare in 2022 while chasing 116 runs against Punjab Kings.
Hyderabad also broke their own record for most runs scored in the first 10 overs of an IPL match, surpassing their previous 158-run feat against Delhi earlier this season after losing four wickets in the same period. Travis Head achieved his fifth half-century in the IPL, with three of those coming this season in less than 20 balls, matching Jake Fraser McGurk's record.
Head also ranks second in scoring 50+ runs in the powerplay in the IPL, accomplishing this feat four times this season, with a total of six instances in his IPL career. David Warner holds the top spot in this category with six such scores inside the powerplay.
