WHO: Trans Fat Control Saves 1.83 Lakh Lives Annually Across the Globe

In the report, the World Health Organization has given information about the way taken by the countries to ban trans fats. At the same time, recommendations have been made on what can be done to exclude it.

The Democracy News | Controlling trans fats in foods around the world has helped save the lives of about one lakh 83 thousand people every time. At present, these programs are being enforced in 53 countries, including India. The World Health Organization has revealed this in its new report released on global progress in barring trans fat.

According to the WHO report, these programs have served 46 percent of the world's population i.e. 370 crore people. This is a major enhancement compared to 2018, when only 6 of the population i.e. only 50 crore people were covered under these programs. In this report, WHO has anatomized the data from 2018 to 2023.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India( FSSAI) had issued rules defining the limits of trans fats in India.

The quantum of trans adipose acids in all fats and canvases shouldn't exceed two percent. According to the report, in January 2024, the WHO awarded five countries for their progress towards barring industrially produced trans fat. Among them were Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
