Hyderabad Court Cancels Bail of Ex-Police Officer in Phone Tapping Case

TDN

Hyderabad– In a significant development in the ongoing phone tapping case, the Nampally court has canceled the interim bail of former additional superintendent of police Bhujanga Rao. The court has directed Rao to report to the Central Prison Chanchalguda by 4 PM on Thursday.* The decision comes after the public prosecutor raised concerns about the possibility of Rao influencing or threatening witnesses, as well as potential evidence tampering if his bail were to be extended further. This latest ruling follows a series of bail extensions granted to Rao, which were based on health-related petitions filed by his counsel. On November 8, Rao's counsel submitted another petition seeking another extension of his bail. However, the prosecutor strongly objected, citing the risks involved in allowing him to remain free during the ongoing investigation. Rao, identified as the second prime accused in the case filed at Punjagutta police station, was initially granted bail in August after claiming serious health issues that included a recommendation for heart surgery from medical professionals.

After considering arguments from both the defense and prosecution, the court ultimately ruled against further bail for Rao, emphasizing the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation. The case has also highlighted the whereabouts of the prime accused, former inspector general of the special intelligence bureau, Prabhakar Rao, who is currently believed to be residing in the United States. Authorities are making efforts to bring him back to India to face trial. Meanwhile, other accused individuals in this high-profile case, including former deputy commissioner of police P Radha Kishan Rao and former deputy superintendent of police Praneeth Rao, remain in custody at Chanchalguda jail. The phone tapping scandal has raised serious questions about law enforcement practices and the abuse of power within police ranks, making it a matter of significant public interest as developments continue to unfold.
