Srinagar — In the aftermath of a tragic terror attack that claimed the lives of two non-local labourers and left two others injured, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his deep condemnation and sorrow over the incident. The attack occurred at a labour camp in Gagangir, located in the Sonamarg region, where the workers were engaged in a crucial tunnel project in the Gund area of the district.* In a heartfelt message posted on social media platform X, Abdullah described the attack as "dastardly and cowardly," emphasizing the vulnerability of the unarmed workers. "Very sad news of a dastardly and cowardly attack on non-local labourers.
These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. Two have been killed and two to three more have been injured in this militant attack. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people and send my condolences to their loved ones," he stated. The incident has drawn widespread condemnation from various political leaders. Sajad Gani Lone, leader of the People’s Conference, also took to X to denounce the violence, calling it an "insane act of madness." He extended his thoughts and prayers to the mourning families, urging for justice against the perpetrators.
"Strongly condemn the dastardly act of terror wherein two persons have lost their lives in Sonamarg. My thoughts are with these two families. May the perpetrators be brought to justice," Lone wrote. Tariq Hameed Karra, president of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC), voiced grave concern regarding the attack carried out by unidentified gunmen. He warned that such incidents could further vitiate the already fragile atmosphere in the region.
"These brutal attacks on innocent labourers must not be tolerated. The government needs to take immediate measures to prevent such occurrences and ensure the safety of all workers in the region," Karra urged. As investigations into the incident continue, the local community remains shaken by the violence, calling for peace and security in the region. The attack highlights ongoing challenges faced by non-local workers in Jammu and Kashmir, who often find themselves in vulnerable positions due to the region's volatile security situation.
