MUMBAI: In a significant upgrade aimed at improving passenger safety and comfort, newly designed Linke Hoffman Busch (LHB) coaches will be added to the Gandhidham-Nagercoil Express, which has been a vital service along India's west coast railway line for the past 32 years. This modernization initiative encompasses Western, Central, Konkan, and South Indian Railways, marking a progressive step in railway travel. The Gandhidham-Nagercoil Express, part of the Southern Railway sector, starts its journey from Gandhidham on the Western Railway and travels to Nagercoil station, covering a distance of 2,341 km across five states: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. The train's route includes stops at 55 stations, making it a lifeline for many commuters in the region, particularly in the Konkan area, with notable stops at Boisar, Vasai Road, Bhiwandi Road, Panvel, Mangaon, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, and Sawantwadi Road.
Passengers can expect a more enjoyable journey as the new LHB coaches come equipped with enhanced specifications, including increased length and width, larger entrances, and improved basin and toilet designs. Additionally, these coaches will allow for increased train speeds, ensuring that travelers can reach their destinations more efficiently. In a visual shift from tradition, the Gandhidham-Nagercoil Express will feature a striking red-grey color scheme, replacing the conventional blue. This aesthetic update aims to provide a fresh look alongside the enhanced functionality of the coaches. The integration of LHB coaches is part of the Ministry of Railways’ broader initiative to enhance safety across the Indian railway network.
These modern coaches are designed to minimize the risk of loss of life in the event of an accident, significantly improving passenger safety. Train No. 16336 Nagercoil-Gandhidham Express is scheduled to be fitted with LHB coaches on November 26, 2024, followed by Train No. 16335 Gandhidham-Nagercoil Express. Each train will feature a total of 22 coaches, including one second-class air-conditioned coach, five third-class air-conditioned coaches, 11 sleeper coaches, two general coaches, one SLR coach, one pantry car, and one generator car. With these upgrades, the Gandhidham-Nagercoil Express is set to provide a safer and more comfortable travel experience for its passengers, reinforcing its status as an essential service on the west coast railway line.
