Pimpri: The Mahalinge police have arrested a gang involved in stealing transformers of the power transmission department in rural and industrial areas and selling them with copper wires and strips. The police have arrested six persons, including a head constable, involved in 16 cases of theft in Pune and Ahmednagar districts and seized goods worth Rs 8 lakh from them.

Ramesh Padwal has 16 cases of theft registered against him at various police stations in Pune and Ahmednagar districts. Sunil alias Sairat has 3 cases of theft and Sunil Suresh Gawde has one case of theft. A total of 340 kg of copper wire and plates worth Rs 2,75 lakh, vehicles used in the crime worth Rs 5,25,000 and goods worth Rs 8 lakh were seized from them.
A total of 9 cases of transformer theft have been unearthed by the accused in Mahalinge MIDC police station. Apart from this, three cases of vehicle theft have also come to light in Mahlunge MIDC police station, Chakan police station and Hinjewadi police station.
Transformers set up by the Maharashtra Electricity Transmission Department for agriculture and new industrial estates in rural areas under the Mahlunge MIDC police station area had increased the rate of theft. As a result, the farmers and orchardists suffered heavy losses. Police Commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey has ordered an inquiry into the incident. As the incidents of transformer theft were taking place in remote areas, eyewitnesses could not be found. To find out the thieves, assistant police inspector Kalyan Ghadge and Amaldar of the investigation team studied the time period of the transformer theft closely and obtained information about the people living suspiciously in the area. Police conducted a technical analysis of the scene of the theft and arrested some suspects. He then confessed to stealing the copper wires from the transformer. The police have recovered five swords, a dagger, a chopper, a chopper, a car and a motorbike used in the crime.
