A man has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Assam's Nagaon district. He jumped into the lake while trying to escape while in police custody, The Indian Express reported.

A 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped in Assam's Nagaon district. The accused has been identified as Tafazzul Islam (24). A case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act.


Police brought the accused to the police station. He then tried to run away. In the process, he jumped into the lake. But he died. The police immediately called the SDRF to search for him in the lake. His body was fished out by the SDRF team, the police said. The constable with whom he was handcuffed was also injured. He has been taken to a hospital for treatment, he added.

According to the police, the girl, a Class 10 student, was returning home on a bicycle after finishing her studies when three men on a motorcycle attacked and raped her in Dhing area around 8 pm on Thursday. After the rape, she was left on the roadside near a pond in an injured and unconscious state.

Chief Minister Sarma told reporters in Hailakandi that the culprits who dared to commit such a heinous crime with a minor Hindu girl in Dhing would not be spared by the law. However, we will take strict action against the culprits and no one will be spared. '



Meanwhile, people from different walks of life took to the streets on Friday morning, demanding the arrest of the culprits. While shopkeepers kept their businesses shut, social and political organisations demanded strict action against the culprits and safety of women and girls.
