In a recent development in the investigation of the brutal murder of Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar, West Bengal CID officials suggested that a potential motive behind the killing could be linked to gold smuggling. The CID asserted that a dispute related to gold smuggling between Anar and his friend, a US citizen and business partner, might have led to the crime.
The CID disclosed that locating Anar's remains would be a challenging task as his body had been dismembered into approximately 80 pieces and dispersed across various locations nearly 12 days ago. An official mentioned that the murder could have stemmed from a disagreement between the politician and his US associate, which is also being investigated.
Efforts to recover the Bangladeshi lawmaker's body parts from a canal in Bhangar, South 24 Parganas district, where the detained perpetrator had directed them, continued throughout the day. The CID officer explained that due to the passage of time since the murder, the body parts, wrapped in plastic bags, may have been consumed by aquatic creatures and other animals, necessitating the deployment of divers. The arrested suspect reportedly confessed to dismembering the MP's body into more than 80 pieces before scattering them in different locations in Bhangar.
Additionally, CID officers were collaborating with a taxi driver who transported the accused individuals to various sites before dropping them near Bangaon. The search for the missing MP, who had arrived in Kolkata on May 12 for medical treatment, was initiated following a complaint by Gopal Biswas, a resident of Baranagar in north Kolkata and an acquaintance of the Bangladeshi politician.
Biswas alleged that Anar, who had been staying at his residence, left for a medical appointment on May 13 but failed to return as planned, prompting Biswas to report him missing on May 18 after he became unresponsive.
