Hyderabad's Cybercrime police have apprehended a 28-year-old man for deceiving Indian students studying at US universities by promising a 10% discount on semester fees. Following a complaint from Trimulgherry, where fraudsters swindled a parent of Rs.4.38 lakh under the guise of offering a fee reduction for their child studying at the University of West Florida, the police took action.
The arrested individual, identified as Kanolla Ashok Kumar, collaborated with his associates Tarun, a US resident, and Waqar from Delhi. Operating through different consultancy agencies that facilitate Indian students' studies in the US, they exploited their access to student databases to defraud Indian students enrolled in various American universities with promises of discounted fees.
The scammers accepted payments from victims into their personal bank accounts and then utilized their credit/debit cards to make the payments. Initially, the fee payment would reflect as completed; however, shortly after, they initiated chargebacks, changing the status to unpaid.
