After completing his education from the Indian Military Academy (IMA), he joined as an officer in the Regiment of Artillery on 13 December 1959.

Former Army Chief General Sundararajan Padmanabhan passed away at his residence in Chennai. He was 83-years-old. He served as the Chief of Army Staff from September 30, 2000 to December 31, 2002. Padmanabhan is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. Their children have come to India. His funeral will be held in the evening.



General Padmanabhan had commanded an artillery brigade and a mountain brigade before joining the prestigious National Defence College in Delhi. He was awarded the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for his service as the 15 Corps Commander.


General Padmanabhan was born on 5 December 1940 in Trivandrum, Kerala. He is an alumnus of Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun and National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune. After completing his education from the Indian Military Academy (IMA), he joined as an officer in the Regiment of Artillery on 13 December 1959. His illustrious career included many prestigious assignments, the Defence Ministry said.
