A Muslim woman in Uttar Pradesh has claimed that she was given triple talaq by her husband for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The woman claimed that her husband divorced her after she praised the two leaders for the development in Ayodhya. Police have registered a case against her husband and in-laws on the basis of a complaint filed by the deceased's father.

In her complaint, the victim said that her mother-in-law and husband beat her up. She also alleged that her husband tried to strangulate her. "I live in Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh," she told PTI. I got married to Arshad on December 13, 2023, in Ayodhya. My father spent more on my wedding than what my in-laws expected.
After getting married, I liked the roads, beautification, Ayodhya Dham and other development works there. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. My husband sent me home. He also poured hot dal on my body while fighting with me. After the dispute, the victim returned to her mother-in-law in Ayodhya after mediation by her relatives.

Meanwhile, the husband gave triple talaq to his wife using abusive words against the above-mentioned leaders after she became a mother-in-law. The victim also claimed that she was beaten up by her in-laws on the day of the divorce. Police have registered a case against eight people with regards to this incident. A case has been registered against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act.

The central government's law against triple talaq
In 2017, the Supreme Court ruled that triple talaq was unconstitutional. After this, some Muslim organizations approached the Supreme Court and demanded the repeal of this law. Terming the practice of triple talaq as harmful to the institution of marriage, the Centre has supported the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, in the Supreme Court.
