Anura Dissanayake, the first Marxist President of Sri Lank

Marxist leader Anura Kumar Dissanayake won Sri Lanka's presidential election on Sunday. 56-year-old Dissanayake was declared the winner after the second round of counting by the Election Commission.

Marxist leader Anura Kumar Dissanayake won Sri Lanka's presidential election on Sunday. 56-year-old Dissanayake was declared the winner after the second round of counting by the Election Commission. He is the leader of the National People's Power (NPP) alliance of the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). Dissanayake defeated Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party leader Sajith Premadasa.

Dissanayake, known as' AKD ', will be sworn in as president on Monday. In his form, Sri Lanka has got a Marxist president for the first time. The results show that young voters are particularly fond of Dissanayake because of his anti-corruption campaign and promise to change the political culture. Significantly, Dissanayake's NPP received only three percent of the vote in the 2019 presidential election. They are originally from rural Thambutegama in the North Central Province. He completed his Bachelor of Science from Kelaniya University in Colombo.
