Mumbai: Around 550 metric tonnes of nectar was collected from natural and artificial immersion pond sites during this year's Ganeshotsav. The municipal corporation has started the process of preparing organic manure from this waste. After immersion, 363 metric tonnes of solid waste was collected by conducting a special cleanliness drive at various chowpatis and beaches.
Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani had directed to conduct a special cleanliness drive in Girgaum, Dadar, Chimbai, Juhu, Vesave (Versova) Madh, Gorai Chowpatty and other places after the immersion of Ganesh idols on Ganeshotsav. Accordingly, the Solid Waste Management Department of the Municipal Corporation worked tirelessly throughout the day and night on Anant Chaturdashi, as well as throughout the day on Wednesday. A total of 363 metric tonnes of solid waste was collected from the cleaning carried out with the help of about seven thousand workers of the Solid Waste Management Department, employees, volunteers of NGOs, school and college students. The entire area was cleaned for Mumbaikars who come to walk on the chowpatis every morning. The premises of public Ganeshotsav Mandals across Mumbai, as well as the route of the immersion procession, were also sanitised.
Municipal Commissioner Gagrani visited various chowpatis on Wednesday and inspected the sanitation activities. Necessary instructions have been given. He interacted with sanitation workers, representatives of various NGOs and students.
Food packets, water bottles
Food wrappers, water bottles, bags, footwear and other items were collected in large numbers in the special cleanliness drive at the chowpatties. The Commissioner directed to dispose them properly and produce manure from the waste.
550 metric tonnes of waste collected
A total of 204 artificial ponds with 69 natural sites were arranged for the immersion of Ganesh idols. More than 500 Nirmalya Kalash and 350 Nirmalya Carrier Vehicles, more than 6000 manpower were deployed for collection of Nirmalya. This year's Ganeshotsav collection is around 550 metric tonnes. The process of producing organic manure from the collected waste will be done by the Solid Waste Management Department. It was taken to 37 different organic fertilizer production plants in 24 administrative divisions of the city corporation. Generally in a month this manure will be converted into organic manure. This manure will be used in the municipal parks, the officials said.
