The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has taken up a 337-km-long metro project to build a robust and state-of-the-art transport system in Mumbai. The first line of the project is Ghatkopar-Andheri-Versova Metro 1. The corridor has been built by Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) through public-private partnership. MMOPL is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the line.
The line was commissioned on 8th June 2014. The dream of Mumbaikars to travel by metro has been fulfilled. This route is popular with tourists. That is why 97 crore passengers have travelled on this route in 10 years. Over 4.5 lakh passengers travel on this route every day.
Metro Line 1 carries 418 trips per day. So far, 16 metro trains have been operationalized covering a distance of 12.6 crore km. Meanwhile, MMOPL has taken several changes and measures to increase the number of passengers on this route. However, the road is in a dilapidated condition. Therefore, MMOPL had proposed that the MMRDA should buy this line. The MMRDA has started the process of taking over the corridor. The ownership of this line will soon come to MMRDA.
