Thane / Badlapur: Akshay Shinde, accused of raping two minor girls of a reputed school in Badlapur, was killed in an encounter with the police on Monday evening. An assistant police inspector, Nilesh More, was injured in the firing.

As soon as the news of Akshay's death was heard, fireworks were burst in some parts of Badlapur in the joy of 'revenge completed'. However, opposition leaders have raised questions over the encounter that took place when the accused, including the school principal, were on the run.

Two girls of a pre-primary school in Badlapur were allegedly sexually assaulted in the school's washroom on August 12. Akshay Shinde, who worked as a sweeper at the school, was arrested after the matter came to light. However, the incident at the school, the attempts to suppress it, the negligence of the police, led to a wave of anger across the state, including Badlapur. A massive protest was held at the Badlapur railway station, demanding the immediate hanging of Akshay Shinde. The team had also investigated and filed a charge sheet against Akshay Shinde. Akshay was killed in an encounter with the police on Monday when he was expected to be sentenced soon. Deputy Commissioner Parag Maner of the Economic Offences Wing has been appointed to investigate the matter.

Incident of clash
A case was registered at Badlapur police station after Akshay's second wife filed a complaint of unnatural sexual assault against him. A police team reached Taloja jail on Monday to arrest Akshay in the case.

According to the police, Akshay snatched the officer's gun and fired three shots at him on the Mumbra Outer Ring Road when he was being taken away in a police vehicle.

According to the police, one of the bullets hit assistant police inspector Nilesh More in the thigh, after which the police officer shot at Akshay in retaliation.

Inspector Sanjay Shinde of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is said to have opened fire at Akshay. However, he was not named in the police report.
