Kolkata, West Bengal — In a powerful display of unity, thousands of people and political parties across West Bengal organized rallies on Sunday to demand justice for a trainee doctor who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month. The victim, whose name has been withheld in accordance with a Supreme Court directive, has been referred to by media outlets as 'Tilottoma'.
The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when the body of the young physician was discovered in a forum room of the medical institution, sparking outrage and calls for accountability. Union Minister and BJP state chairman Sukanta Majumdar led one of the prominent rallies in Howrah, asserting that the ongoing protests are part of a larger movement for justice. “We are merely a part of the mass demonstrations demanding justice for the woman doctor.
The administration has taken measures to shield the accused and placed the blame on a single individual. The people of Bengal remain vigilant and have not left the streets,” Majumdar declared, raising a placard that read, “Justice for Tilottoma.” The rallies saw participation from various sectors of society, including around 800 alumni from four schools marching from Dakshinapan to Gariahat in south Kolkata.
They raised their voices for a safer environment for women in both workplaces and public spaces. “Our main demands are ‘justice for Tilottoma’, equality for women, and the ability for them to lodge FIRs whenever they face such situations, ensuring their safety in all working areas,” stated Garima Ghosh, an alumna of St. John’s Diocesan.
Additionally, students from 20 schools in the Behala area participated, marching for a kilometer while holding posters and chanting slogans such as “We want justice.” Another rally, which included around 200 working professionals and retirees, traveled from Ruby More to Gariahat, echoing the demand for justice and calling for a swift investigation.
“We want the CBI to expedite the inquiry and hold all those involved in the heinous crime accountable,” urged Biman Roy, a retired state government employee. The investigation into the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), as the community continues to rally for justice and the prosecution of those responsible for this tragic incident. The enduring demand for safety and equality for women remains at the forefront of these demonstrations, highlighting a growing movement for change in West Bengal.
