A portion of the ceiling outside the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Assam's Guwahati collapsed on Sunday due to a sudden storm accompanied by heavy rainfall. Although no injuries were reported, the roof collapse led authorities of the Adani Group-managed airport to temporarily suspend operations and divert six flights to other destinations. A video of the incident, which has gone viral on social media, captured the sudden collapse of the ceiling, prompting passengers and airport staff to seek cover. Additional videos showed airport staff working to remove excess water from the premises.
Chief Airport Officer (CAO) Utpal Baruah informed news agency PTI that the storm uprooted a large tree at the Oil India complex outside the airport, blocking a road. "The tree was very old and couldn't withstand the impact. As a result, the roof tore open, and water started flowing inside. However, there were no injuries, and the situation is under control," he stated. Baruah further mentioned that water seeped into the terminal from the ceiling. "I am personally monitoring the situation to ensure passengers face no inconvenience. Due to the storm and heavy rainfall, visibility significantly decreased, leading us to divert six flights," he added.
Meanwhile, flights operated by IndiGo, Air India, and Air India Express were redirected to Agartala and Kolkata. However, as visibility improved later, operations resumed, and flights began landing at the Guwahati airport.
