Controversy Surrounding Narendra Modi's Jiretop : The choice of headgear by Prime Minister Narendra Modi caused a significant stir in political circles, particularly within Maharashtra. The opposition accused the ruling grand alliance of disrespecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Amid escalating tensions, NCP Leader Praful Patel has now clarified his stance on the matter.
During his nomination filing in Varanasi for the Lok Sabha constituency on May 14, Narendra Modi received congratulations from NCP leader Praful Patel, who placed a jiretop on Modi's head. Critics expressed outrage over Modi sporting a turban typically associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Uddhav Thackeray and leaders of the Mahavikas Aghadi engaged in discussions with Praful Patel and the BJP. Despite the ongoing controversy, Patel has now articulated his position.
In an effort to quell the controversy, Praful Patel stated, "The founder of Hindu Swarajya, the revered Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, serves as our role model and inspiration. We are committed to upholding his principles and the path of public welfare. There was never any intention to disrespect Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and we will be mindful moving forward." This statement from Patel aims to bring closure to the heated debate.
Regarding the significance of the jiretop, historian Jaisingrao Pawar emphasized, "Only Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had the privilege of wearing the jiretop. Other leaders and commanders sported turbans, but this distinct headgear was reserved solely for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, as per historical traditions. "Pawar further commented, "Even prominent figures like Shinde and Holkar refrained from donning the jiretop. Those seeking favor from Modi by imitating such gestures will face consequences; they may be elevated today but will eventually face repercussions."
Opposition figures have criticized both Modi and Patel for their actions. Uddhav Thackeray accused Modi of making this gesture to gain favor in Maharashtra, while MP Amol Kolhe challenged Praful Patel's decision. BJP state president Chandrasekhar Bawankule questioned the rationale behind criticizing Modi for accepting the jiretop from Patel.
