A journalist named Ashutosh Srivastava was murdered on May 13 in the Shahganj police station area of Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Authorities suspect unknown criminals to be responsible for the crime. The police are currently investigating the incident. According to a report by news agency PTI, Ashutosh Srivastava, a resident of Sabarhad village, was on his way to Imranganj Bazar when he was fatally shot by unidentified individuals near Jaunpur-Shahganj road around 9:30am on Monday morning.
The family of the deceased journalist claimed that he had previously requested security from the Shahganj police in a letter sent a month ago, but no action was taken. This alleged negligence by the police has sparked outrage among the public. Local journalists reported that Ashutosh Srivastava frequently covered news related to the anti-cow slaughter issue and had received threats from cow smugglers, which he had reported to the police.
Superintendent of Police Dr. Ajay Pal Sharma stated that investigations into the case have commenced and assured that the perpetrators will be apprehended soon. The Jaunpur Journalist Association has strongly condemned the murder and urged for the immediate arrest of the culprits. They have also demanded a compensation of Rs.50 lakh for the family of the deceased journalist, attributing Ashutosh Srivastava's death to alleged police negligence.
