Thankachan, a resident of Idukki who was convicted of murder, turned himself in to the police along with his son-in-law. He was imprisoned in 2000 and released on parole after three years.
However, he did not come back as required, leading to an extensive police search in various places that did not result in any leads. In his time away, Thankachan stated that he had been working on different estates in Wayanad.
