New Delhi : The UGC has informed the Supreme Court that Priya Varghese, appointed as an associate professor in Kannur University's Malayalam Department, lacks genuine teaching experience. The UGC stated that teaching experience cannot be equated with research time. This appointment goes against UGC regulations as Priya Varghese falls short of the required eight years of experience for an associate professor role.
The UGC has requested the annulment of the appointment and the Kerala High Court's approval. UGC rules are binding on all universities, superseding state laws when in conflict. The UGC dismissed arguments put forth by the state government supporting Priya's appointment. Priya defended her appointment to the Supreme Court, citing qualifications and merit as the basis.
Pending before the court are petitions from the UGC and Joseph Skaria, a Malayalam teacher at Changanassery DB College, contesting Priya's appointment.
