Water seepage was detected in the tunnels of Mumbai's ambitious sea coast road project, sparking criticism towards the municipal administration. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site to oversee immediate repairs following the leak, ensuring no traffic disruptions during the maintenance work.
The Municipal Corporation inaugurated one side of the Sea Coast Road project with much fanfare on March 11, with the southern route set to commence shortly. With a hefty expenditure of fourteen thousand crore rupees, concerns over the project's work quality have emerged as the tunnels began leaking just weeks before the monsoon season.
Observations of water dripping from the tunnel roofs, see page through walls, and leakage at tunnel joints have prompted swift inspections by municipal officials and directives for repair work from Chief Minister Shinde. Advanced technology, including polymer grouting injections, will be employed to provide a permanent solution to the leakage issue without impacting the tunnel's structural integrity.
The repair process is expected to be completed promptly while ensuring smooth traffic flow. Chief Minister Shinde also mandated preventive measures to address leaking joints and prevent future leaks in all tunnel sections. Recent incidents, such as flooding at the Hajiali underpass during high tide and reports of cracks on the seashore road, have fueled public discontent and opposition criticism towards the municipality's planning practices.
