New Delhi: The Congress executive meeting held on Saturday saw a strong demand for Rahul Gandhi to assume the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, a position that has not been filled for a decade. It is understood that Rahul Gandhi is considering the proposal and will make a decision regarding it.

In the past parliamentary sessions of 2014 and 2019, despite being the largest opposition party, the Congress failed to secure at least ten percent of the seats required (55 seats) to claim the Leader of the Opposition position in the Lok Sabha. However, with the recent developments, the Congress stands a chance of attaining this position as the largest opposition party.

During the meeting, a resolution was passed urging Rahul Gandhi to take on the responsibility of leading the opposition party, as stated by the organization's general secretary, K. C. Venugopal. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. Shivakumar proposed Rahul Gandhi's candidacy, which was approved by Shashi Tharoor. Notably, party president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra, actively campaigned for this success.

As a result, Shivakumar and Tharoor expressed the opinion that Rahul Gandhi should become the Leader of the Opposition. Regarding the constituencies of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala, both won by Rahul Gandhi, a decision must be made within 14 days following the Lok Sabha election results. It will determine whether Rahul Gandhi will retain his MP position in Rae Bareli and Wayanad until June 17.

There is a prevailing sentiment within the Congress that Rahul Gandhi should maintain his seat in Wayanad, with upcoming assembly elections in Kerala, while Rae Bareli holds historical significance for the party. Resigning from Rae Bareli could potentially convey a negative message.
