A heatwave persisted across various parts of the country on Saturday, with Phaloli in Rajasthan reaching a scorching 50 degrees Celsius. This intense heat impacted millions of individuals. The India Meteorological Department reported that the country's highest temperature of 50.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Churu, Rajasthan, on June 1, 2019. Subsequently, Phaloli registered the second-highest temperature on Saturday.
Not only the northern and central regions but also the mountainous areas of Himachal Pradesh and the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in Northeast India felt the effects of the escalating temperatures. Official data revealed that at least 17 locations in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh recorded maximum temperatures of 45 degrees Celsius or higher.
In Rajasthan, besides Phaloli, Barmer recorded 48.8 degrees Celsius, Jaisalmer 48 degrees, and Bikaner 47.2 degrees Celsius. Consequently, the Disaster Management Department instructed the District Collector to implement necessary precautions. Temperatures soared above 45 degrees Celsius at six spots in Delhi, while Cooch Behar reached 40.5 degrees Celsius, Silchar in Assam hit 40 degrees, Lumding 43 degrees, Itanagar 40.5 degrees, and Pasighat 39.6 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department issued a warning predicting a continued heatwave until May 29 for Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra.
