Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed surprise at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement that the 'Shakthi scheme had led to revenue loss for the Bengaluru metro'. The 'Shakti' scheme, introduced by the previous Congress government, allows women to travel for free on state-run buses. According to Shivakumar, Bengaluru metro has generated Rs.130 crore in revenue over the past year, with a 30% increase in foot traffic.
He emphasized that the Shakthi scheme benefits people statewide, while the metro operates within Bengaluru. Shivakumar clarified that the Congress initiated the Shakthi scheme to alleviate the financial strain on women due to rising prices. He also noted the successful collaboration between the State and the Centre in managing the metro. Shivakumar refuted the claim of misinformation given to the Prime Minister and highlighted the efficiency of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) and Bengaluru metro in implementing the Shakthi scheme.
Additionally, he mentioned plans to acquire 1,000 new buses, with an initial allocation of 100 buses to Ramanagara district and further distribution in North Karnataka. Shivakumar clarified that the focus is on sustaining KSRTC without profit and ensuring the government covers the expenses of Shakthi scheme tickets.
