New Delhi: In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court of India on Monday adjourned the hearing regarding the bail plea of Abbas Ansari, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP). The adjournment comes in connection with a case involving an unlawful jail visit. The bench, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, opted to defer the hearing at the request of senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who represented Ansari.
The court has rescheduled the matter for hearing on October 14. This date also coincides with another plea filed by Ansari, which seeks the quashing of the Gangsters Act case against him. Abbas Ansari, the elder son of the late gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was implicated in a scandal during his time at Chitrakoot jail, where he was found to have illegally met his wife, Nikhat Bano, allegedly with the complicity of prison officials.
The Allahabad High Court had previously denied bail to Ansari in May, citing concerns regarding his “profile, background, and family antecedents.” Justice Jaspreet Singh commented on the responsibilities associated with his role as an MLA, stating, “His conduct has to be of a higher standard than other common persons of society.
She and several others were arrested for facilitating illicit meetings with her husband, violating prison regulations. Following these events, the Uttar Pradesh government transferred Abbas Ansari to Kasganj Jail. Additionally, state police have taken action against prison officials accused of facilitating the unauthorized meetings in exchange for cash. As the case continues to unfold, the Supreme Court's decision to adjourn the hearing keeps the spotlight on the legal proceedings surrounding Abbas Ansari and raises questions about accountability within the state’s correctional facilities.
