Suspected militants set fire to two police posts, a forest department office, and at least 70 houses in the Jiribam district of Manipur, according to police officials. Following this incident, tension escalated, leading to the transfer of the Superintendent of Police.
Violence has persisted in Jiribam since Thursday evening when suspected militants killed a 59-year-old man. More than 70 state police officers were flown from Imphal to Jiribam to support security forces in the counter-terrorism efforts.
Despite this reinforcement, militants attacked police posts and residences on Saturday, burning over 70 houses in Lamtai Khunau, Dibong Khunau, Nankhal, and Begra villages. Additionally, approximately 239 Meitei residents were evacuated from the outskirts of Jiribam on Friday and relocated to a newly established relief camp at a multi-sports complex in the district.
The outbreak of violence in Jiribam began on Thursday evening following the killing of a 59-year-old man, Soibam Saratkumar Singh, who had gone missing on June 6 while on the farm. His body was discovered later, prompting the imposition of prohibitory orders after locals set fire to abandoned structures.
The state government has appointed M. Pradeep Singh as the new president. Jiribam's Superintendent of Police, A. Ghanshyam Sharma, has been reassigned as the Additional Director of the Manipur Police Training College. During Sharma's tenure at the Police Training College, M. Pradeep Singh will assume the role of Senior Superintendent of Police in the Jiribam district.
