Hyderabad is facing ongoing sewage overflow issues as the monsoon season nears, particularly in the southern and central parts of the city. Residents are concerned that the upcoming rain will worsen the situation. Despite voicing their worries on social media, locals criticize the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) for its slow response in addressing the problem.
Additionally, desilting efforts in various areas are progressing slowly. Many residents have pointed out that numerous open drains in different neighborhoods are filled with garbage. This poses a risk of streets flooding and continuous sewage overflow in some regions when it rains. Despite numerous complaints, these issues persist, causing significant challenges during the monsoon season as the resolution process takes months.
Affected areas include Nampally, Red Hills, Shaikpet, Tolichowki, Mehdipatnam, Film Nagar, Nizampet, Kukatpally, RK Puram, and Malkajgiri. Local resident Sai Teja expressed frustration, stating, "We are exhausted from reporting sewage overflow problems on the HMWSSB app. We have been grappling with this issue for a month now. Apart from the unpleasant odor, waterlogging is attracting mosquitoes to the area.
The absence of a proper sewerage system complicates matters. Despite our appeals to the authorities to take decisive action, no steps have been taken." Mohammed Abid Ali, a resident of Nampally, highlighted the dire situation in many colonies, remarking, "Many areas in Nampally have become breeding grounds for sewage overflow. HMWSSB's failure to install new drainage lines has led to water stagnation every where.
The aging sewer lines exacerbate the problem, causing water accumulation on the roads during even moderate rainfall. Despite our repeated complaints to the Water Board officials, our pleas have been ignored." Resident R Shekar from Red Hills lamented, "As the monsoon season approaches, desilting activities are progressing slowly in multiple locations.
The delay is reportedly attributed to election-related factors. Despite our continuous complaints on the HMWSSB app urging the cleaning of drains, no action has been taken."
