Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a big announcement on Friday (September 13). The Central Government has renamed the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands as Port Blair. Port Blair Port will now be known as Sri Vijayapuram Port.
Amit Shah made the announcement on microblogging site Twitter. "It is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resolve to free the country from all symbols of slavery. Inspired by this resolve, today the Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to rename Port Blair as' Sri Vijaypuram '. The name 'Sri Vijayapuram' will continue to reflect our freedom struggle and the contribution of Andaman and Nicobar in it.
Home Minister Amit Shah said the island has a special significance in India's freedom struggle and history. The Chola emperors had established their naval bases on these islands. This island is ready to accelerate India's security and development. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had hoisted the Indian flag on this island. Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters had waged a great struggle to free Mother India from the shackles of slavery. This island is witnessing that freedom struggle.
Port Blair was named in honour of Archibald Blair.
The Modi government is changing the names given to different places and structures in India by the British. The Centre has so far changed the names of many cities. Now the name of Port Blair has been added to it. In 1789, the East India Company named the island Port Blair in honour of Archibald Blair, which has now been changed by the Modi government.
How to get to Port Blair?
Port Blair is one of the most beautiful islands in India. Port Blair can be reached by ships from Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata and Chennai. To reach Port Blair one has to travel 56 hours from Vishakhapatnam, 60 hours from Chennai and 66 hours from Kolkata. The flights will be operated from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad.
