Tragedy in Pune: Girl dies as 4 fall into water-filled pit.

Four girls fell into a water-filled pit dug for widening and grade separator work in the Katraj-Kondhwa Road area in Pune. Tragically, one girl lost her life while three others were rescued. The Kondhwa police have filed a case of culpable homicide against the contractor involved. This incident occurred on June 8 around 11:00 o'clock in the morning near Mahakali Mandir in Pune.

Jagdish Chhagan Shilawat, aged 35 and residing behind Kesar Lodge in the open field near Mahakali Temple in Kondhwa Bu, lodged a complaint at the Kondhwa Police Station. A case under IPC 304(A) has been registered against the contractor responsible for constructing a new road from Khadimshin Chowk to Katraj. The Shilawat family, who are engaged in knife sharpening, had set up a hut on the Katraj-Kondhwa road.

The rainwater-filled pit, dug for road widening, became the unfortunate site of the incident. On Saturday morning around 11:00 am, Sargam Jagdish Shilawat (15 years old), Janubai Ramesh Shilawat (16 years old), Tejal Jagdish Shilawat (12 years old), and Muskan Deva Shilawat (16 years old) went to wash their clothes. While doing so, Muskan slipped and fell into the water in the pit, prompting the other three to enter the water in an effort to rescue her.

Upon receiving the report that all four girls had drowned, the fire brigade retrieved them. Muskan was admitted to the hospital unconscious, but unfortunately, she was declared dead by the doctors. The pit, initially intended for road widening, had accumulated water due to rainfall.

Investigations revealed that the accident occurred due to the absence of necessary safety precautions. As a result, the police have taken legal action against the contractor, with further inquiries being carried out by Police Inspector Crime Mansingh Patil.
