Dhaka: Bangladesh's interim government chief Mohammad Yunus on Monday met the Hindu community in the country and greeted them on the occasion of Janmashtami. He promised to promote interfaith harmony in Bangladesh. The Hindu community was targeted in the violence that broke out after former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India. Their businesses and properties were vandalised, as well as Hindu temples. Against this backdrop, Yunus met the Hindu community.
There can be no division among the people of our country. We are equal citizens. "The interim government is committed to protecting the rights of every citizen of the country," Younus was quoted as saying by the chief adviser's office. After meeting the Hindu community, Yunus said it was the government's responsibility to protect their rights. President of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad Basudeb Dhar, Acharya of Dhaka's Ramakrishna Mission Swami Purnatamananda Maharaj, Hindu community leaders Kajol Debnath and Monindra Kumar Nath were present at the meeting. "We spoke for about half-an-hour. All of us Bangladeshis are members of one family and we will remove the feeling of communalism, "he said.
