Panaji, Goa – The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into a burgeoning cash-for-jobs scandal that has rocked Goa, leaving many residents disillusioned and desperate for employment. During a press conference in South Goa on Tuesday, AAP state president Amit Palekar spoke out against the rampant cheating related to government job placements, urging an immediate halt to recruitment processes within government departments. Palekar emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating, “If a CBI probe is not feasible, then the inquiry should be conducted by a retired High Court judge.” He alleged that the situation is indicative of a larger, systemic issue rather than a series of isolated incidents, describing it as a “big racket.”
He further called for accountability among senior officials connected to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, suggesting that their roles in the scandal must be scrutinized. The controversy has intensified as more than half a dozen individuals have been arrested by the Goa police for their involvement in the cash-for-jobs scam, which was uncovered following a spate of complaints from frustrated job-seekers. The seriousness of the situation was underscored by a tragic incident where a person involved in the investigation reportedly took their own life, prompting Palekar to assert that this deep-rooted scam has dire consequences that extend beyond financial loss. “These accused prey on job-seekers for cash, which is condemnable,” Palekar remarked, lamenting the human toll that such fraudulent activities can exact.
He added, “This tragedy is a stark reminder that this scam is not just about money; it has started taking a toll on human lives.” AAP legislators, including Cruz Silva and Venzy Viegas, also criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, claiming that the Goa Staff Selection Commission has been sidelined to facilitate corrupt practices in job recruitments. Viegas expressed concern over the disillusionment among Goan youth who have been deprived of fair employment opportunities. In response to the growing outcry, Chief Minister Sawant urged individuals who have fallen victim to these fraudulent schemes to come forward and lodge police complaints, assuring that those responsible would face consequences.
He also mentioned that action would be taken against two government officials implicated in aiding the job racket. The ongoing investigation saw further developments as a woman from Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district was arrested for allegedly duping a person of Rs 20 lakh under the pretense of securing railway jobs for her children. The Goa police have vowed to continue their efforts in uncovering and dismantling the networks behind this alarming fraud. As the situation unfolds, the AAP’s demands for a comprehensive investigation underscore the urgent need for transparency and accountability in Goa’s employment practices, a sentiment echoed by many citizens seeking justice and fair opportunities.
