Itanagar / Gangtok: The results of the assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim were announced on Sunday. The BJP won 46 out of 60 seats in Arunachal Pradesh. In Sikkim, the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) won 31 out of 32 seats. Though all the 12 BJP MLAs lost, SKM leader and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tawang said he was with the NDA.
The BJP has won the Arunachal Pradesh assembly elections for the third consecutive time. The BJP won 10 out of 46 seats uncontested. Chief Minister Pema Khandu was elected unopposed. The BJP won 36 of the 50 seats that went to polls. The National People's Party (NPP) won five seats and the People's Party of Arunachal won two seats. Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won three seats.
The Congress had to be content with just one seat. Three were elected unopposed. After the results, Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the voters from 'X' and assured that his party will work more vigorously for the development of the state. Chief Minister Pema Khandu termed the victory as historic. Following the verdict, Governor K. T. Patnaik dissolved the Assembly. Chief Minister Khandu, while resigning, staked claim to form the government again.
In Sikkim, the SKM won a landslide victory. The BJP and the Congress had fought the elections separately. The BJP has fielded candidates in all the 32 seats, including 12 sitting MLAs. All of these candidates lost. The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), which was in power for 25 consecutive years till 2019, got only one seat. However, after the results, Tawang told Indian Espace that his party was part of the NDA.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the people of Sikkim who voted for the BJP on 'X' social media and congratulated Tamang on his victory. Reacting to the Prime Minister's post, Tamang also said that he will work with the central government to fulfill his common goal for the betterment of the state.
The BJP won two seats. His party got 58.38 per cent of the votes. Meanwhile, SDF president Pawan Kumar Chamling lost from two constituencies. Former football captain and SDF vice-president Bhaichung Bhutia also lost. Following the verdict, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya dissolved the Assembly.
