Mumbai, India– The long-standing issue of traffic congestion at Chhedanagar Junction has finally been addressed, bringing much-needed relief to daily commuters. In a momentous announcement, both flyovers constructed on the Eastern Expressway were opened for traffic on Saturday, coinciding with the festive occasion of Dussehra. For years, the Chhedanagar Junction, which connects the Mankhurd-Ghatkopar Expressway and the Eastern Expressway, has been notorious for its massive traffic jams. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) initiated the Chhedanagar Improvement Project in 2018, aimed at alleviating the chronic congestion. The ambitious project involved the construction of two flyovers one extending from Shiv to Thane and the other from Mankhurd to Thane.
Construction of the flyovers began in 2018; however, progress was significantly hampered during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing a halt in work for an extended period. Earlier this year, in April 2023, the MMRDA managed to open the first flyover linking the Mankhurd-Ghatkopar area to the Eastern Expressway, providing significant relief to drivers traveling between Navi Mumbai and Thane, as well as Ghatkopar. Despite this improvement, traffic congestion persisted on the Eastern Expressway, prompting MMRDA to expedite the construction of the second flyover.
A few days prior to its opening, motorists faced exasperating delays of up to half an hour just to cover the short distance from Chembur Suman Nagar to Chheda Nagar. However, with the successful opening of the flyover, travel time has been dramatically reduced to a mere two minutes. The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve Mumbai's infrastructure and ease its notorious traffic woes. Commuters can now look forward to a smoother and more efficient travel experience at Chhedanagar Junction, heralding a new era of hassle-free commuting on the Eastern Expressway.
