Living Planet Report 2024 Highlights India's Sustainable Dietary Practices : In a groundbreaking revelation, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has designated India's food system as the most environmentally sustainable and beneficial diet in the world, according to the recently released Living Planet Report 2024. The report underscores India’s unique food consumption patterns, which are lauded for their sustainability and minimal environmental impact. As global discussions around food systems intensify, Indian cuisine has been consistently recognized for its nutritional balance and ecological mindfulness.
The WWF report emphasizes that if nations worldwide were to adopt India's dietary practices, significant strides could be made in reducing environmental damage by the year 2050. Following India in the rankings for the best food systems are Indonesia, China, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. In stark contrast, Argentina, Australia, and the United States have been rated among the worst for their diets, primarily due to rising obesity rates linked to excessive consumption of fatty and sugary foods. The report posits that adopting India's food system could ensure that 84% of the Earth's resources would be sufficient to meet the global population's needs by 2050, leaving only 16% of resources unused.
Such a shift could substantially curb global warming, helping to maintain temperature increases within the critical threshold of 1.5°C. Additionally, the report suggests that implementing these dietary changes would foster a healthier environment overall. A key highlight of the report is the emphasis on millet consumption, which has gained recognition for its health benefits and climate-friendly properties. India stands as the largest producer of millet globally, accounting for approximately 41% of total production.
