President Biden to Host Diwali Celebration at the White House
Washington, D.C. – President Joe Biden is set to celebrate Diwali, the Festival of Lights, on the evening of Monday, October 28, at the White House with a vibrant gathering of Indian Americans from across the country. This year’s reception holds special significance, as it marks President Biden’s final Diwali celebration in office, following his announcement not to seek re-election in the upcoming presidential race. Continuing a cherished tradition, President Biden will illuminate a Diya lamp in the Blue Room before addressing guests. The act symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, resonating deeply with the values celebrated during Diwali.
In a unique touch, the President will introduce a video message from Sunita “Suni” Williams, a distinguished NASA astronaut and retired Navy Captain. Williams, who took command of the International Space Station in September, has a history of sharing Diwali greetings from space, embracing her Hindu heritage even while orbiting Earth. Known for her commitment to promoting Indian culture, Williams has previously brought cultural items such as samosas and copies of the Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita to the ISS.
The evening promises to be an enchanting affair, featuring musical entertainment from Nootana, a classical South Asian dance and music ensemble based in Washington, D.C., alongside performances by the Marine Corps Band. As President Biden prepares for this momentous occasion, the White House reflects on the significance of Diwali—not only as a celebration of light and joy but also as a time to honor the rich contributions of the Indian American community to the cultural tapestry of the United States. The gathering will serve as a heartfelt farewell to a tradition that has united many in celebration and solidarity.
