New Delhi — In a significant event held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu unveiled three important publications of the Supreme Court of India, highlighting the judiciary’s pivotal role in shaping the nation’s legal landscape. The publications released include “Justice for Nation: Reflections on 75 Years of the Supreme Court of India,” “Prisons in India: Mapping Prison Manuals and Measures for Reformation and Decongestion,” and “Legal Aid Through Law Schools: A Report on Working of Legal Aid Cells in India.” During her address, President Murmu underscored the importance of the first publication, stating that “Justice for the Nation…” encapsulates key milestones in the Supreme Court’s 75-year journey, illustrating its profound impact on various facets of citizens’ lives.
She emphasized that the Supreme Court has cultivated a jurisprudence deeply rooted in Indian ethos, which is essential for fostering a just and equitable society. Highlighting the significance of legal education, the President remarked on the report detailing the work of legal aid cells in law schools across the country. She noted that these legal aid clinics play a critical role in providing holistic legal education to students while sensitizing them to the needs of vulnerable communities. President Murmu also expressed her concern regarding the status of under-trial prisoners, acknowledging it as an ongoing challenge.
She affirmed that the publication on the prison system aims to explore the judiciary's role in alleviating the plight of undertrial prisoners, thus contributing to necessary reforms within the penal system. Concluding her remarks, President Murmu expressed confidence that these valuable publications would further the goals of free legal aid and prison reforms. She commended the Supreme Court for its exceptional contributions and congratulated past and present members of the Bench and Bar for their efforts in establishing the Supreme Court of India as a revered institution. “I wish the apex Court of India a greater future ahead,” she stated, leaving attendees with a sense of optimism for the continued evolution of justice in the country.
