New Delhi — In a heartfelt address on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the enduring legacy of Lord Buddha and the recent elevation of the Pali language to 'classical' status, a recognition he deemed a fitting tribute to the enlightened teachings of the Buddha. The occasion marked International Abhidhamma Day, celebrated with a special program in the capital, attended by Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, a host of monks, diplomats, and other dignitaries. In his speech, Modi highlighted the significance of the event, emphasizing that the recognition of Pali as a classical language underscores the rich cultural heritage of India.

Modi took the opportunity to critique the Congress government, expressing his disappointment over perceived neglect of India's cultural roots since independence. He lamented that while nations worldwide are embracing their heritage as a core aspect of their identity, India has fallen behind. "Before independence, invaders sought to erase our identity. It is time we shed the shackles of a slave mentality and reconnect with our heritage," he stated. In light of the current geopolitical climate, the Prime Minister called for global leaders to take a lesson from Buddha’s teachings, advocating for peace over conflict.

“The world grappling with instability and insecurity can find solutions not in war but in the teachings of Buddha,” he said. Modi articulated a vision of a world that prioritizes harmony, urging everyone to "learn from the Buddha, stay away from war, and take the path of peace." Reinforcing his message, Modi quoted key teachings of Lord Buddha: “Strife and discord do not lead to peace, and there is no greater happiness than peace. Everyone's welfare is Lord Buddha's message.”

He emphasized that the Indian government is committed to promoting education and research based on Buddhist ideals. Recalling his earlier statements at the United Nations, Modi reiterated that India has gifted the world the wisdom of Buddha, advocating for love and understanding rather than war. As the Prime Minister concluded his address, he reaffirmed that the teachings of Lord Buddha will continue to guide the policies and programs of his government, framing them as essential tools for promoting peace and welfare globally.
