Kirkuk, Iraq – In a significant counter-terrorism operation, six members of the Islamic State (IS) group were killed in a series of airstrikes conducted by Iraqi F-16 fighter jets in northern Iraq's Kirkuk region. The strikes, based on intelligence reports and extensive monitoring over the last two months, targeted a known IS hideout, according to a statement released by the Security Media Cell, affiliated with the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.
The airstrikes, which occurred on Thursday, were followed by a ground raid executed by Iraqi security forces at the site of the strike. During the operation, the forces discovered the bodies of the six militants, one of whom has been identified as Omer Salah Ne’ma, an elderly group member known by the alias Abu Khattab.
In addition to the fatalities, security forces recovered explosive belts, munitions, and communication devices used by the terrorists. This operation underscores Iraq’s ongoing efforts to dismantle remaining IS cells within the country.
While the security situation in Iraq has improved since the military defeat of IS in 2017, remnants of the group continue to pose a threat by infiltrating urban centers and rural areas. These militants have been known to conduct frequent guerrilla attacks against both security personnel and civilians, highlighting the ongoing challenges in ensuring stability across the region.
The recent airstrikes represent a proactive measure by Iraqi authorities to combat the resurgence of IS and to bolster the safety of its citizens.
