Pune: In a shocking incident that has raised concerns about security in historical places of worship, thieves made off with Rs 6,000 by breaking into the donation box at the Peshwa-era Omkareshwar temple. The theft occurred during the early hours of Saturday, and the incident was discovered the following morning. According to a complaint filed by Kaustubh Ulhas Gade, a 40-year-old resident of the Omkareshwar Mandir in Shaniwar Peth, the thief discreetly entered the temple and forcefully broke the lock of the donation box, absconding with the cash.
The police were alerted to the situation on Sunday morning when Gade reported the theft at the Vishram Bagh Police Station. Upon receiving the complaint, Police Inspector Arun Ghodke from the Crime Branch examined the scene of the crime. Investigators have secured CCTV footage from the temple premises to aid in identifying the suspect and are actively working to trace the thief. This incident at the Omkareshwar temple is not isolated; recent reports indicate a series of similar thefts across the city.
Just days prior, thieves targeted the Shree Tarakeshwar temple in Yerwada, the Navaratrotva Mandal in Shaniwar Peth, and the Pragatisheel Mandal in Narayan Peth, making off with cash from their donation boxes. In response to these crimes, the Vishram Bagh police apprehended a suspect along with a minor in the Aundh area linked to the thefts. In an effort to enhance security measures, local authorities have urged temple administrations citywide to install CCTV cameras to deter future incidents and protect the sanctity of sacred spaces.
The investigation into the Omkareshwar temple theft continues, with police sub-inspector Patil leading the inquiry. As the community grapples with the implications of these thefts, the need for increased security measures in places of worship has never been more evident, ensuring that these historical sites remain safe for worshippers and visitors alike.
