Mumbai : The excitement of tourists was dampened this week as the highly anticipated Vistadome coach was not included in the reopening of the Rani of Matheran, the beloved mini train that connects Neral to Matheran. The journey resumed on Wednesday, drawing crowds eager to experience the scenic ride through the lush landscapes of the Western Ghats. However, many visitors expressed their disappointment upon discovering that the iconic Vistadome coach, famed for its panoramic views and luxurious amenities, would not be making an appearance. The Neral-Matheran mini toy train, a 117-year-old heritage railway operated by Central Railway, is a significant attraction for both local and international tourists.
Since the inauguration of the Vistadome coach in 2019, the service has witnessed a surge in popularity, providing travelers with a unique way to soak in the breathtaking scenery. The coach features transparent glass windows and a roof, offering an unobstructed view of the picturesque surroundings, along with innovative interiors designed for comfort and safety. Despite the joyful anticipation surrounding the train’s reopening, many tourists were left frustrated. “We were really looking forward to the Vistadome experience. It’s what makes this journey special,” lamented one visitor. The absence of the Vistadome has sparked a wave of dissatisfaction among those who had hoped to enjoy its unparalleled views and amenities, including comfortable seating and LED screens.
This year, the direct Neral-Matheran service was suspended during the monsoon season, operating only between Matheran and Aman Lodge from June 8 to October 15. However, due to increased demand, the service was extended until November 5, with trains resuming from Neral to Matheran on November 6. The first train departed at 8:50 AM, followed by another at 10:25 AM, drawing eager tourists to the ticket counter. According to Dr. Swapnil Neela, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, the Vistadome coach is currently undergoing routine maintenance at the Paral factory and is expected to return to service within the month. “We understand the disappointment of our passengers, and we are working to have the Vistadome back on the tracks as soon as possible,” he stated. As the nearest popular tourist destination for residents of Mumbai, Thane, and Pune, Matheran continues to be a favored escape for city dwellers. The Rani of Matheran mini train remains a cherished attraction, and the return of the Vistadome coach is highly anticipated as tourists look forward to fully immersing themselves in the beauty of the journey ahead.
