Canada has implemented sanctions against seven Israeli settlers and five entities due to "extremist violence" against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank. This is the second instance in slightly over a month that Ottawa has taken such measures.
The recent sanctions targeted individuals and entities allegedly involved in facilitating, supporting, or financially backing acts of violence by Israeli extremist settlers against Palestinian civilians and their property. The sanctioned Israelis include Ben Zion Gopstein, Daniella Weiss, Einan Ben-Nir Amram Tanjil, Elisha Yered, Ely Federman, Meir Mordechai Ettinger, and Shalom Zicherman.
The entities named are Amana, Hilltop Youth, Lehava, Moshe’s Farm, and Zvi’s Farm. In a statement on June 27, Foreign Minister Melanie Joly expressed deep concern over extremist settler violence in the West Bank, condemning such actions for their impact on Palestinian lives and prospects for lasting peace.
Joly called on authorities to safeguard civilians and hold perpetrators of violence accountable. The sanctions prohibit transactions with settlers or their organizations and bar their entry into Canada. Since 1967, Israel has occupied the West Bank, home to three million Palestinians and around 490,000 Israeli settlers residing in illegal communities.
Violence in Gaza escalated significantly prior to the outbreak of war on October 7, reaching levels not seen for about two decades.
