Earthquake occurrences are on the rise worldwide, with no signs of slowing down. Multiple earthquakes take place daily in various locations, sometimes more than one in a day. On Monday, May 27, Tonga experienced a significant earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale, striking 70 kilometers northwest of Fangale'ounga. The seismic event took place at 2:17 am Indian time and was confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Tonga is no stranger to frequent earthquakes, with the latest one reaching a depth of 112.2 kilometers. The strong tremor in Tonga today caused panic among residents in the affected and nearby areas, prompting them to flee their homes. Fortunately, the earthquake resulted in minimal damage, affecting only a few buildings.

The global surge in earthquake incidents is evident, with occurrences reported in different parts of the world over the past year. While some earthquakes are harmless, others have caused significant destruction in recent months. Notable instances include earthquakes in Turkey, Syria, Morocco, Afghanistan, Nepal, China, Japan, Papua New Guinea, and Taiwan, which left a trail of devastation. The increasing frequency of earthquakes is a cause for concern.
